Stephen Foster ( 1826-1864)

He was the first american to make a living as a professional song writer. His songs would evoke themes of lost youth. He had some financial issues and only recevied limited roylaties for his work. 

19th century music in america were mostly devotional in nature and were written in shape-note Notation. He left behind many different works when he died that are worth many millions of dollars today.
